UC Davis students from Spreading Smiles provide oral exams to Bolivian residents this past Winter. The student volunteers gave out over 3,500 toothbrushes and 500 hygiene kits.
A group of 16 UC Davis students traveled to Bolivia during winter break in 2007 to provide dental and health care for over 3,000 people.

The trip took place from Dec. 17 to 23 and was the second trip to Bolivia organized by Spreading Smiles, a nonprofit campus organization composed of UCD students dedicated to improving health care for the local and global community.

During their first trip in March 2007, seven students provided dental care for 1,000 people through donations from local dentists and businesses. For their trip in December, Spreading Smiles was officially sponsored by major dental supplier Henry Schein and was gifted over $4,500 of dental materials and equipment.

Even a travel warning because of political tensions in Bolivia didn't prevent a group of 16 UC Davis students from bringing medical and dental care to the country's poverty-stricken residents last month.

The students, part of a nonprofit campus organization called Spreading Smiles, spent the week before Christmas in the heart of the South American jungle. They gave pain medication, antibiotics, dietary advice and teeth-cleaning services to more than 3,000 people.

'The American consulate in Bolivia posted a warning only a few days before we planned to leave. But, after an emergency meeting to decide whether we should continue on our humanitarian trip, the volunteers unanimously decided to go, regardless of the current unrest affecting the very airport where we would arrive,' says Cedric Papa, former vice president of Spreading Smiles.
